Interesting.....but how much is it??

Just wonder if I would feel dizzy by reading the monitor long..

I can see the benefit of the e-book - like easy book marking interesting paragraphies and ideas. And you can bring a few more "books" when travelling without the space of the few books.

But the major questions remains are how heavy is it? how long the battery last? Another unknown is how much my mind attached to the fuzzy feel of handling a paper book?

Also I would think that as ebook device getting competitive, the manufacturer would start cramming features into the little pad, making the software too complicated and too easy to crash. Just look at our cell phones. In the early days, it's impossible to conceptualize that a phone can crash or freeze. Now my phone freezes every few days, with a complete crash every other month or so.

The market is heating up, even my kid wants one.

With Apple iPad, Google Edition, etc... coming to the market, more publishers are negotiation deals, more promotions, and more people going to buy one.

Anyone had tried?

(BTW a few messages above I said my phone crashed every few days. The crashes has stopped ever since I updated the OS of the phone. Strange.)

I am still in the old days, still prefer a 'real paper book', especially some magazine with good printing.   :-\

I have the same thinking as Kai, not only for the feeling of holding a book, but on the more important thing that a book should have and the designers usually overlooked: the ability to write something on the e-book.

When I read a book, I used to write something on the shoulders of the paragraphs, not usually key words but sometimes irrelevant drawings, just to signify "I've-been-there". Or sometimes I just underlined some words on the book. I don't know whether this is a implied feature of e-book, but if not, then it should be a big NO factor for me.

Shouldn't be difficult for a software system. But the problem is when more and more features are added, the whole device may hang more often.

I am moving this topic to the Bookwyrm section, since it's about books and reading...

Anyway, I ordered the Amazon Kindle 3G about 10 days ago. It's out of stock and it will take anothe month before they can ship.
http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Display-Generation/dp/B003FSUDM4/ref=sa_menu_kdp33

And a few days after the order, I happened to have someone from the US visiting me. He has an old Kindle. I tried reading books on it. My quick comments:

1. The screen really looks good. Not "Wow" good when you first see a bright color monitor, but it really look like ink on paper.

2. The older one is too heavy to handle for long term reading. The one I tried has the leather cover. The new version I ordered is a bit lighter, and I think I should not put on the leather cover.

3. The big unknown for me is how easy can I flip back and forth. Like the book I am reading now has maps, and many times I need to flip back to visualize the events by reading the map.

I struggled a bit before ordering the Kindle. The main reason is that Amazon can recall any book at their will and I am philosophically against that. But then again, Apple/Microsoft can also remotely disable your iphone/windows, or google may already knows me better than I know myself, or Octopus can track someone's movement already real time...

I preper paper too, tho it is not quite environmental.

For a set of paper of document, I would not mind to read it on a device. But for book..no.....Somehow it is just a personal preference, I think.

I also thought about iPad but everyone I know that has iPad just using it as a large iPhone - showing pictures or playing games. I have not seen any book.

Kindle version is from Amazon only. The gadget can display pdf, so maybe you can transfer pdf Chinese books to it?

I arrived at the office and my Kindle also arrived today. More interesting is that Wing also got his iPad. So I am playing with both now.

In the few min that I played with the iPad, I see there are lots of classic books, including Chinese ones, available for free. So far all the ones I see are from the Gutenbery Project.

ipad used to come with 3.2.1 which allows jailbreak.  3.2.2 is the lastest version of OS on ipad that we couldn't do anything about it.

Just would like to tell you this (http://www.iphone4hk.com/) site contains all information that you needed. My old iPhone is JB'ed by reading instruction here and dl a lot of software.

In the mean time, you got to wait till JB is available then. ;D ;D ;D

What's the purpose of jailbreak?
Get apps free?
Not to provide real personal info to Apple?

When iPhone was released few year ago, it was tied up with AT&T, people want to use iPhone with their own carrier.  This was first I heard people are trying to break this 'imprisonment' by JB'ing it.

I think the reason why the mainstream people JB their own iPhones are because they can enjoy free(cracked) software, and download software that are NOT permitted by Apple.  (Well, Apple's AppStore has absolute power to permit whether your software is 'authorized' to be placed in AppStore and AppStore is the only source of software that a non-JB device could go  :( )

For the personal information, I think it's not a major concern as when I bought it, non-JB'ed, I first needed to register in AppStore with my personals, including my credit card number, so that sub-sequential purchase with my iPhone will directly debit to my credit card.

Thanks for the explanation. Grace just got her 愛瘋4, and found that the email program is in sync with the mail program in the big Mac. So Apple somehow already have record of how she setup the mail program in the local computer, and reflect that on the phone.

It's look convenient, but it's also means someone is having copies of your record, most likely without you knowing or explicit authorization.

Back to the Kindle. I have been using it for almost two weeks. It's really good for reading.

I also just found out that there is an experimental web browser built in, but not too useful. It's good enough just to read books.

That maybe, or may not be true. The iTune (on Mac) may just copy the setup information on your Mail (on Mac) and then copy it to the Mail (iPhone) without asking your authorization.... They may not read your mail.

What I found recently is that Google is trying to read your email, by introducing something called
"Priority Inbox", see the movie here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nt3gE9dGHQ), if they are able to prioritize your mail, then they have to read/scan it.

No matter whichever terms you like, either read or scan, they're going to judge the mails' importance by looking thro' it.  The age of Big Brother is coming.!

Chin, if you sync an i-phone or i-pod with a Mac then everything will be matching.  So, all data transfer storage should be local, unless you have a Mobile Me account.

google has introduced Priority Inbox for Gmail, but I don't think it means they are scanning my mail anymore than they already do to give me targeted advertising.  Personally, I think Gmail is a great product, but I'm mindful that there is always a risk with using the service.  But, I also wonder how secure the data I keep exclusively to my home machines is, given all the holes in OS security.

The iPhone mail had the same structure/folders BEFORE the first time sync. So Apple has a copy of the structure on their side.

What he mentioned is really true.  However, there are always media (like Next Media) emphasize that they are  market-oriented.  So sex, violence and privacy is always the headline news.  What a shame!

Is it a 6" screened?  Would that be small for reading?  After some reading using ipad on Haodoo, I found Kindle may be a better choice in terms of its weight, eye-saving and of course battery problem.

I just received the new toy yesterday and was messing around with it....

It was easy to use and within 5 min I started reading some of my books.   Just one problem: I viewed my pdf inside the Kindle and the font were not look as solid as it compared to other real E-book's font, e.g user guide from Amazon, I guess this is a problem of pdf format itself as it needed to scale to fit the screen.

Anyone has this experience?  How to improve this? ???  Or any conversion tools you guys are using?
