Budapest.....Most of the old cities in Europe have a Palace for the King and a Theatre and Church were built next to the Palace. Nowadays, most of these building are converted into National Gallary, Art Museum, Theatre, etc., which reserved most of the cultures of their country......

The first one was the Palace but now a National Gallary, while the second one is the Church where most of the Hungarian King got their monarchy.....

Vienna - the capital of Music..........Really like their buildings with classic style.....some Greek some Roman......but with some modern art......

The first pic is the Hundredwasser which is a public housing building designed by a modern artist Hundredwasser ("hundred water") I don't really appreciate it however.....seems it is a bit unmatched with the classic atmosphere ........

The second one is the Helden Platz where Hilter had given a speech there just before WW2.......

Your theme for visiting Vienna must be something about music.......They have a number of statues of important musicians / composers there......

Beethoven, Mozart and Johann Strauss......The statue of Strauss is gold-plated by Japanese because they like his music very much.......but I don't like that shiny gold colour......

The second pic is the Parliament building of Austria, a classic Greek building........

Still in Vienna, Maria Theresa was the most influencial figure in East Europe as she affected the region for a few centuries.....

You can see quite a lot of her statues in East Europe, like the one shown in first pic........

A Palace again in Vienna.....Schonbrunn ....it is very much like the one in French......Versailles......but this one is smaller.....tho still big.....

Salzburg.......This was a city for trading Salt, and this is where the name comes from....Salzburg means Salt City......

There are two things that make this city famous....The first thing is that here is the birth place of Mozart, the second thing is that the movie "Sounds of Music" was filmed here.......

If you can recall the scenes of movie, you may ring your bell on the first picture.......the Pavilion is much smaller than I expect......

Second pic shows the place where we can learn how to sing.....doe, a deer....a female deer......ray....a drop of golden sun.......

Third one is the Horse Pond......and .....me.....a name....I call myself......far......a long long way to run.......

Cesky Krumlov....an old city.....and quite isolated....it gives me a peaceful and relaxing feelings.....

The first two pics shows how beautiful it is.......The third one shows the castle at the top of the hill......Do you think that the sculpture on the wall are nice ? You are wrong....they are paintings.......because the king was poor.....

Now Prague......An ancient city in Czech....

The first pic is the Prague Castle...the biggest castle in the world....now the office of the Czech president.....

Inside the Castle, there is a church in Gothic style and there is a mosaic tile drawing showing the Final Judgement......

Prague is beautiful......and artistic......the Vltava River runs through the city.....

The third  pic is the old town hall tower with a clock there.....it will have some mechanical movements turned up every hour and it attracts a lot of people staying there to watch...but it is just like the one in New World Centre, TST......

Wenceslas Square in Prague....this is the place where the "Spring of Prague" happened.......

Now the square goes smaller as more commercial buildlings were built.....

Dresden, Germany......another nice old city with Elbe river flowing through

Same as most of the old cities I had visited in this trip, they have a palace, square, theatre, church.......etc....

The second pic is the wall art showing all the Kings that had ruled the Germany area in ancient time.......The funny thing is that, after two world wars, most of the old buildings in Dresden were destroyed....EXCEPT this one......the bomb never hit it.........so most of the building here were re-built but not this one.

These two building is just next to the Brandenburger Gate....The first one is the US Ambassador.....I took this pic because the day was 911 which their flag was down......

The second one....guess what.....Do you remember a scene that Michael Jackson swung a baby on the balcony of a hotel....here it is......

Berlin is full of war history.........These 2 pics is not so clear and I knew that when I took them but they have some meaning there.

The first pic shows the place where Hilter suicided, now there are only 2 trees......

The seond one is the so-called "Underground Library". The place was the location where the books were burnt under Hilter's order. After war, an artist built an underground room there with some empty book shelves put inside. At night, a stream of light will go up to the sky and reminds people why they blindly follow Hilter's instructions at that time and how the war hurts us.

Another historical moment is the separation of East and West Germany........It was signified by the Berlin Wall......

The Wall was down 20 years ago.......some of the wall was removed and road built, some are remained for memorising the event.

The first pic is on the road where the brick indicates the previous position of the wall....My left foot is on the East Germany and my right is on the West....

The second pic is the boundary point between East and West Berlin......

Again....the two sides of the wall.....

On the east side, more than 100 artists have put their painting on the east side to celebrate the wall down 20 years ago......

Whenever people want to go from East Berlin to West or West to East, they have to go through the checkpoint to show their permission.

Checkpoint Charlie is one of these.....A closer look of the checkpoint is shown on the third pic where the first two show the different side of the post, see the pic of the soldier there?

Very nice pictures and explanations. Thank you.

The Vienna Hundredwasser is kind of cool in its own odd asymmetric way, although personally I would like my home to have bigger windows. The ivy-like plant makes it look even more rustic.

I have seen pictures of the golden Strauss before, and thought it was a bit odd but assumed it was just old style. Turned out to be “Asian” style. 

And I can see that the pictures were taken with a small digicam, yet they still turned out very nice. Enough natural sunlight, hand steady, and the horizontal & vertical lines are held up right.

Thanks.....I took almost 210 pics by using this tiny foolish digital camera...........My sister-in-law and one of our friend has their camera equipment of about 30lbs. They have more than 4 different lens, etc...which I don't know the details when they bra bra bra.......And they took about ....I guess 2000 pictures........

They will send me some nicer picture later.......

If they are OK, post some of their pictures.

The first picture of the river in Budapest kind of reminds me the scene in Mission Impossible. Was that scene happened in Budapest, where the CIA guys found themselves ambushed and ran to the bridge and jumped (or something like that, I am very famous in my family for NOT remember movie details.)

I don't recall the scene of Mission Impossible.....A few months ago I watched a Japanese series call Nodame....which talked about orchester and love. Because of the success of the TV series, a movie was produced and filmed in Prague. I spot out some scene that was appeared in the movie and took these pics.

Thanks for sharing. These are very nice pics.

Yes I can see the difference in the pictures taken with the larger camera & the small camera.

See the following - one from the small Panasonic digicam. The 2nd one with the bigger Nikon D70 + 18-70 lens. Both pic taken with similar sensitivity ISO100 vs 200. Both taken at similar aperture F9 vs F10.

The first pic the lines are not as well defined, the pixels are more jumbled up, and lost quite a bit of detail (e.g. look at the tiles next to the words "Dem Deutschen Volke"). This 'blow up' pictures are taken at 100% crop from the original.

But...
technicality aside, sometimes the composition and timing is more important. In my opinion a picture that tells a story, touch someone's emotion, is far better than pictures that is technically superior but no thought in composition or lack of focal point holding the audience's attention.

I am reading a book that has a short side story about John von Neumann, that he was born in Budapest in 1903, and that at the time, Budapest was the 6th largest city in Europe, highly educated populace with 90% literacy, 25% Jews (which may imply wealthy merchant class?). Nowadays, I wonder if many people can/would name Budapest in the first 10 of European cities.

Kind of remind me of Kaifeng (開封) - the subject city in 清明上河圖. It had a million population (probably the largest city in the world at the time) and the capital of Song. Now a 2nd or 3rd tier city in the mainland.

Well...that's history......it had its shot somehow......

I was told that the ancestors of Hungarian were 匈奴. They kept retreating during the war with Ginghis Khan. A myth said that they kept losing the war with Mongolian and an eagle showed their way to retreat. Finally they reached Budapest and made the place their root. So there are lots of eagle statues in Hungary.

Somehow, if you see the face of a Hungarian, they are quite like those people in 新彊........ :o

That story sounds interesting. I think Hungarian tends not in believing this story, because believing so means they're decedent of losers in the war.  Similar to those Australian, they tends not like mentioning how their grand-grandpa were immigrated to this lonely island from England.  (also similar is how Japanese think where they're from...)
