Decanting a vintage port wine
« on: 04 May 2010, 03:27:51 »
This is my second time decanting a vintage port. The last one was a 1985 Warre and it was very easy.

This one is Fonseca 1977. I only very recently read up on vintage port. The washed off white paint at the back was to indicate "this side up" during cellar time. So the sediments all collected at the other side.

I had this at home for a few weeks, and I had stood up the bottle during the whole period.

With the lead(?) sealing, and without. The cork is sealed with another label.

What's on the label?

The cork was not in good shape. About 1/4 remained inside. I just pushed the rest into the bottle, then pour out the port with a very fine tea filter.

Compare the cork from the 1985 Warre.

Uncorking an old wine needs another type of opener indeed, like Ah-So.

Ah-so is a twin pring cork puller.

If you only have a screw type one, you have to do it very gently and twist it a bit more into the cork. Otherwise it will break, like what you have now.

BTW, would you let me have a bottle of it??

I know. The guy in the shop also told me the same thing.

Yes you can have a bottle, when my cases arrive (1977 Warre's, 1985 Fonseca's, 1995 Taylor's). This one was from Watson's.
